The Importance of Traditions – Veteran’s Day

Here on the lush, fertile grounds of Coal Pick Distillery, located in legendary Muhlenberg County, the roots of American tradition run deep. Not only do we honor our local and regional heritage in the bourbon we distill, but American tradition governs the things we choose to value, honor and respect.

Like Veteran’s Day.

Wednesday, November 11 is the day all Americans need to pause and reflect on the honorable service and self-sacrifice of the military veterans in our communities.

Historically, this American holiday coincides with other international holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day. Their mutual origins date back to the end of World War I when all major hostilities with Germany ceased at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

At the urging major U.S. veterans and military organizations, this day of remembrance was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

At Coal Pick Distillery, we urge you to show your appreciation to those members of the military in your family and your community, both past and present.

Here are 5 ways you can do something meaningful this Veterans Day:

SHOW UP

Attend a Veterans Day event in your area if allowed due to social distancing. Make it your mission to cheer and clap as the military parade goes by!

DONATE

There are multiple great organizations who offer vital services and support to military veterans. During the month of November, Coal Pick Distillery is donating all proceeds from our Veteran’s Day t-shirt to the following organizations: The Green Beret Foundation, The Donnie Edwards Best Defense Foundation and the Hunter Seven Foundation.

FLY YOUR FLAG

Show your support by showing our colors. Make sure you follow proper display rules and flag etiquette with this summary from military.com.

ASK A VETERAN ABOUT THEIR SERVICE

It’s important to ask the kinds of questions that elicit positive stories of honor and service. Questions like “What was your favorite part about your military service?” are less invasive than questions about combat. Be sensitive. Listen. And, thank them for their service and sacrifice.

VISIT A VA HOSPITAL

Find your nearest VA hospital but ask about their policies for interacting with patients, especially during the pandemic right now.

For veterans who need assistance; veterans and their families can always call 1-877-4AID-VET (1-877-424-3838) to access VA services and to inquire about available services.

Finally, don’t confuse the meaning of Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Veteran’s Day is the holiday to thank those who are serving or have served in the military and are still with us. However, Memorial Day is to reflect and remember those who lost their lives in service to their country.

Even sincere and well-intentioned people make the mistake of confusing the two. Combining or conflating these two holidays can sometimes serve to diminish the importance of both.

We urge you to embrace the importance of the holiday and show your support through action in your community.
